My Husbands Cheater Sunburn Exposed His Affair

The morning I found the notebook, I had already spent three days cleaning out my mother’s house. Grief had left me emotionally numb in strange and unpredictable ways. I could sort through boxes of ordinary objects without feeling anything, yet a simple grocery list written in her familiar handwriting forced me to sit down on the kitchen floor. I kept the list and continued searching through the house, trying to decide which pieces of her life I could let go and which ones I could not.

The notebook was hidden inside a shoebox at the back of my parents’ bedroom closet, behind winter boots that had not been worn in years. It was an old black-and-white composition notebook held together by a deteriorated rubber band. Inside the front cover, written in my mother’s handwriting, was a date from twenty-three years earlier and two words: “For Claire.” My name is Claire Whitmore. I am forty-four years old, and my mother, Diane, had died six weeks earlier at the age of seventy-one after an illness that gave us no real time to prepare.

The notebook was not exactly a diary. It was a collection of dated entries written directly to me over many years, sometimes months or even years apart. The first entry had been written when I was twenty-one and away at university. In it, my mother revealed that she and my father had nearly separated that year. She explained that she wanted me to understand one day that long marriages are complicated, and that people can deeply love each other while also finding each other nearly impossible to live with.

The revelation shocked me because my parents had been married for forty-seven years and had always seemed inseparable. I sat on the edge of their bed and read for two hours as the afternoon light moved across the room. My mother’s handwriting changed throughout the notebook, becoming slower and more deliberate with time. The final entry was dated only four months before her death, suggesting that she had planned to give it to me but had kept waiting for the right moment—a moment that never came.
