Dolly Parton put a secret song in a time capsule before her

Dolly Parton reportedly left behind one final musical surprise before her death, although fans will have to wait years before they can hear it. Her nephew, Bryan Seaver, announced her passing on social media, explaining that Parton had asked him years earlier to make the announcement when the time came. Her representatives later confirmed that the country music legend had been diagnosed with cancer and died at the same medical center where she had been receiving treatment. Her death marked the loss of one of country music’s most beloved and influential stars, but her extraordinary musical legacy continues to live on.

Among Parton’s unreleased works is a song titled “My Place In History,” which she wrote specifically to be placed inside a time capsule at Dollywood in Tennessee. The capsule is scheduled to be opened in 2045, meaning the song is not expected to be heard publicly until then. Parton discussed the unusual project in her 2020 memoir, *Songteller: My Life in Lyrics*, explaining that she had been asked to create a song that would remain sealed for 25 years. The idea clearly fascinated and frustrated her at the same time because she knew she would not be able to hear the finished song with the rest of the world.

During later interviews, Parton admitted that having to wait was difficult. In a 2022 appearance on *The Kelly Clarkson Show*, she joked about wanting to dig up the time capsule because she believed the song was particularly good. She also spoke about the strange experience of writing something for people who might not even have been born when she created it. Despite her frustration, she understood that the song was meant to become a message from one generation to another and expressed hope that it would eventually feel special when the capsule was opened.

Parton also joked about whether she would still be alive when 2045 arrived. During an appearance on *The Tonight Show*, she said she expected to be gone by then, while humorously leaving open the possibility that she might still be “hoppin’ around” at 99. Now, the song takes on an even more emotional significance as a rare piece of music deliberately created for the future. When the Dollywood time capsule is finally opened in 2045, fans will discover the song Parton considered worth hiding away for a quarter of a century—and hear one final musical message from an artist whose work has touched generations.
