When Silas developed a 103-degree fever and became unusually sleepy and unwilling to drink, the pediatric nurse told his mother to take him to the emergency room. She grabbed the diaper bag, carried her two-year-old toward the garage, and discovered that her SUV was gone. Trent’s car was already at the repair shop, and she quickly realized he had taken her vehicle for a weekend at his friend Dave’s house.
She called Trent twice, but he rejected both calls. He then texted that he had taken the SUV because Dave didn’t want to pick him up and they needed the extra space for their fishing gear. She immediately explained that Silas was sick, that the nurse wanted him seen urgently, and asked Trent to bring the SUV back because he was only twenty minutes away.
Instead of returning, Trent accused her of overreacting. He told her to give Silas Tylenol and said he wasn’t going to interrupt his weekend because of what he called a “basic toddler cold.” When she explained that Silas was barely staying awake and refusing fluids, Trent replied that she was being hysterical and trying to ruin his weekend.
