The Hidden Illness That Took Hollywood Legend

Born in 1934, Bill Bixby became one of television’s most beloved actors and directors, building a career that lasted more than three decades. He is perhaps best remembered as Dr. David Banner in The Incredible Hulk, where his quiet humanity and emotional depth made the character unforgettable.

Bixby first gained widespread recognition in 1963 as Tim O’Hara in My Favorite Martian, starring alongside Ray Walston. He later became known for The Courtship of Eddie’s Father, The Magician, and numerous guest appearances on popular television programs. During the 1980s, he also expanded his career behind the camera, directing television episodes and eventually working regularly on Blossom.

Despite his professional success, Bixby endured heartbreaking personal tragedies. After divorcing actress Brenda Benet in 1980, he suffered the devastating loss of their six-year-old son, Christopher, in 1981. The following year, Benet died by suicide. Bixby continued working despite the immense grief, channeling himself into acting and directing.

In 1991, Bixby was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He remained determined to work and spoke publicly about his illness, hoping his experience would encourage others to take their health seriously. His condition gradually worsened, but he continued directing Blossom even when his strength had significantly declined.
Bixby married Judith Kliban in October 1993, just weeks before his death. She cared for him during his final days as his illness progressed. On November 21, 1993, Bill Bixby died at the age of 59.

His life was marked by extraordinary professional achievements and devastating personal losses. Yet, through it all, Bixby remained a respected performer whose warmth and talent touched generations of viewers.
From comedy and family television to superhero drama and directing, his work continues to be remembered. More than three decades after his passing, Bill Bixby remains a beloved figure whose performances demonstrated both remarkable talent and genuine humanity.
